In The Chilled Parent, Offen discusses the importance of peacefully and powerfully ruling the roost so that both children and parents can exist in a healthy and happy way. In each chapter she looks at the different social factors that can affect parenting styles such as diet, television, work, and school. Emphasis is placed on putting the family first rather than placing so much power on material things, and thus taking back control of parent-child relationships.
Today's parents know all too well the ups and downs of everyday life and how it can affect their parenting. Too often things that seem so important at the moment push critical things aside like quality time with the kids. Many parents wonder if they are making the right choices and how their choices will ultimately affect their children. Offen, a mother of three, takes from her personal experiences to help other parents effectively and supportively bring up their children in the thought-provoking prose of The Chilled Parent.
The Chilled Parent is divided into to major sections. The first is a general discussion of general parenting techniques and experiences. Offen discusses some basic rules of parenting that include loving unconditionally, respecting the children, admitting mistakes, and listening. The second part of the book includes personal anecdotes to illustrate her points and to explain the fundamental changes she and her family endured in an effort to improve home life.
Although the author does draw from her own mothering experiences, she in no way attempts to preach about how one should parent their children and does not claim that her way of life is the only correct way. What Offen does do throughout The Chilled Parent is to offer options on how to manage the parent-child relationship, provide a harmonious living environment, and how to influence the children's lives. Offen successfully manages to achieve this goal through her witty and entertaining anecdotes throughout the book.
